The Great Disney Debacle: How My Family Embarrassed Ourselves in Front of 100 Strangers on a Plane

Mark || Monday, February 24, 2025

It’s a well-known fact that traveling with kids can be a recipe for disaster. But, dear reader, you have no idea. Our family’s trip to Disney was a masterclass in mortification, and it all started on the plane.

As we soared through the skies, my youngest daughter, a tiny human with a penchant for chaos, decided that the most turbulent part of the flight was the perfect time to bust out her bag of Skittles. I mean, who needs safety protocols when you have sugar-fueled excitement, right?

As the plane lifted off the ground at a 45-degree angle, my little sweetpea opened her bag of Skittles, and the entire contents spilled out, rolling under the seats like a rainbow-colored avalanche. The sound of 100 strangers collectively groaning in unison still echoes in my mind.

But, of course, that was only the beginning. As we hit some, ahem, “difficult” weather (read: tornado-level turbulence), the plane began to drop and level out in a stomach-dropping, scream-inducing cycle. And that’s when my youngest decided to channel her inner thrill-seeker, shrieking “WEEEEE!” at the top of her lungs every time the plane plummeted towards the ground.

I’ve never seen a group of adults hate a 5-year-old as much as they did on that flight. I’m pretty sure some of them were contemplating child abandonment, or at the very least, trading seats with someone in a different zip code.

When we finally landed safely (miracles do happen!), my wife and I grabbed our daughters and belongings and made a beeline for the exit, desperate to escape the withering stares of our fellow passengers.

As we emerged into the bustling chaos of Orlando International Airport, we blended in seamlessly with the crowds, our embarrassing in-flight antics lost in the sea of sunscreen-slathered tourists.

And that, dear friends, is the story of how my family became the stuff of in-flight legend, a cautionary tale of sugar-fueled chaos and the importance of packing a spare set of earplugs.
