Disney’s Pop Century Resort is a value-priced resort located at Walt Disney World in Lake Buena Vista, Florida, offering an affordable and immersive stay. The resort invites guests on a nostalgic journey through the 20th century’s most memorable pop culture moments, spanning from the 1950s to the 1990s.

A Tale of Two Halves: The History of Pop Century

The concept for Pop Century emerged in the late 1990s, following the success of Disney’s All-Star Resorts. Disney announced plans in December 1999 for a fourth value resort themed around 20th-century American pop culture. The original vision for Pop Century was ambitious, with two distinct halves representing the entirety of the 20th century. The currently operating section, known as the “Classic Years,” showcases the 1950s, 1960s, 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s.

Construction began on both phases simultaneously, but the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks led to a significant downturn in tourism, forcing Disney to re-evaluate its expansion plans. The “Legendary Years” project was put on hold indefinitely, and the “Classic Years” finally opened on December 14, 2003.

Theming and Property Layout

Disney’s Pop Century Resort is thoughtfully themed to evoke the distinct styles and trends of each represented decade within the “Classic Years.” Each section of motel-style buildings is adorned with larger-than-life phrases and iconic symbols specific to that era. The resort comprises ten separate four-story buildings with a total of 2,880 rooms, grouped into themed areas:

  • 1950s: Featuring a bowling pin-shaped pool and giant jukeboxes.
  • 1960s: Home to the Hippy Dippy Pool with flower-shaped water features and oversized yo-yos.
  • 1970s: Marked by a giant 8-track tape player and platform shoes.
  • 1980s: Showcasing a Computer Pool (shared with the 90s), Rubik’s Cube staircases, a giant Walkman, and Mr. Potato Head.
  • 1990s: Featuring cell phone staircases, a giant laptop, floppy disks, and rollerblades.

Comfortable and Functional Rooms

Following the refurbishment, all standard rooms at Disney’s Pop Century Resort offer queen-sized beds, one of which is a convenient Murphy bed that can be easily converted into a table, maximizing space. King bed rooms are also available. The renovated rooms feature hard surface floors, updated televisions with outlets and USB ports below, a mini-fridge, and a coffee maker.

Dining Delights

Pop Century offers several convenient dining options:

  • Everything POP Shopping and Dining: The main food court, featuring various specialty shops.
  • Grab-N-Go Market: Located within Everything POP, offering pre-packaged snacks and beverages.
  • Petals Pool Bar: Situated near the Hippy Dippy Pool, serving a selection of alcoholic beverages.

Amenities and Perks

Staying at Disney’s Pop Century Resort comes with a variety of amenities and benefits:

  • Transportation: Bus service to all four theme parks, water parks, and Disney Springs, as well as the Disney Skyliner station.
  • Pools: Three themed pools, including the Hippy Dippy Pool, Bowling Pool, and Computer Pool.
  • Activities: A standard lineup of value resort activities.
  • Shopping: The Everything POP gift shop offers a range of merchandise themed to the 1950s-1990s.

A Popular Choice Among Value Resorts

Disney’s Pop Century Resort consistently ranks high among the value resorts due to its fun and immersive theming, functional and refurbished rooms, and the significant benefit of Skyliner transportation. While the All-Star Resorts may offer slightly lower prices and better last-minute availability, Pop Century is often preferred for its more engaging theming and transportation advantages.
